  • This is the first Valentines Day for Kens Old Fashioned Candy Shop, which opened this fall. The store is filled with affordable and high quality Valentines Day gift ideas, including small rose-shaped chocolates complete with stems, as well as little stuffed animal keepsakes.   • #13;

  • Blue Iris Flowers has the traditional array of roses and traditional arrangements that can still be ordered. The store is also stocking cards and stuffed animals so you can purchase all you need in one place. What is new this year are beautiful orchids in different colors, which the store is selling for under $40. Board hears ideas for middle school plan

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Jackson-Madison County Schools Superintendent Buddy White said during Thursday night?s monthly board meeting that the approved No Child Left Behind waiver for Tennessee may change the status of several of the district?s schools.

?Our staff will be working to interpret what that means for us,? White said. ?We?re looking at how that changes the status of our schools and how we might need to change our focus based on our status.?

State officials initially filed the waiver last year with the United States Department of Education.

In the request, Tennessee offers that teachers and students should be measured on improvement, or growth scores, rather than the increasing targets under NCLB.

White also gave board members a document outlining proposals from local middle school principals who have been researching turnaround methods.

?They?ve met with business leaders and successful turnaround districts,? White said. ?They?ve submitted their list of ideas and they will be present Saturday morning to discuss them with the board.?

The board will hold a two-day retreat, which begins at 6 pm today.

On Saturday, the board will also discuss Bill Baxter?s proposal to institute a three strikes policy for students with discipline problems.

He read a prepared statement during Thursday?s meeting criticizing those who spoke against his idea in Monday?s work session.

?There was a lot of talk about due process, but what I witnessed whether intentional or not was a complete disregard of due process in a board work session,? Baxter said.

He added that his idea should have been able to go before the policy committee and a full board discussion before other people discussed its merits.

?It was a hijacking and sabotage of the process,? Baxter said. ?That?s something that most entities wouldn?t allow. In their haste to take control or sabotage a good idea before it was given a chance to go through board critique and refinement, they gave their opinions as though we had a finished product. The idea will be given the due process it deserves and will be taken up at the retreat.?

5 Ideas To Supplement Your Retirement Income

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Many of us want to retire and enjoy the relaxation that comes with that retirement. For others, they want to stay active and keep working, and for some its a necessity to earn extra money. Whether you want to work or have to work, there are many options available to help you find jobs, extra income or even second careers. (For more, check out The New Retirement Age.)

Retirees have many job skills to offer an employer, but many also have the expertise to start their own business, to finally follow that dream theyve put off or create an entirely new work path. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Think Like Youre 20
If youre looking for extra income, want to interact with people or just need to get out of the house, then act like a kid. One of the best pieces of advice Ive seen given to retirees looking for extra income, is to think like a college student. Most young adults today work two, three and sometimes four part-time jobs while juggling classes. These jobs are usually minimum wage, require only a few hours a week and give you many opportunities to try different occupations. These part-time jobs also give you the option of working as many or as few hours as you want. They also dont require the same time commitment as a full-time job, and give you flexibility to do other things, like take a college class.

Be a Consultant
Youve probably worked at several occupations over the course of your working career. Use that accumulated knowledge to your advantage. One of the first places you might look for opportunities is the company you retired from, they now have an opening. You might suggest to them that youd like to return to the company as a consultant on a contract or part-time basis. You are already familiar with the company, its product and its operations so youd be a perfect consultant.

Consider working for a start-up company. Many young entrepreneurs just starting their companies are in need of your vast business experience. While many couldnt hire you full-time, they can use you as a consultant on an as-needed or freelance basis. The opportunities to use your work experience are varied. You just have to take a few minutes to consider all the ways where you could find a niche and market those skills.

Temporary Agencies
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, temporary employment accounted for 3.1 million jobs in 2008, and that number is expected to rise. Traditionally, when the economy sees a resurgence, corporations hire temporary workers first, and then create permanent jobs when their confidence in the economy rises.

This is also a great place for retirees to find jobs. Temporary agencies receive requests for hundreds of different occupations. Many agencies specialize according to employment field, so you may have to research them to find a good fit with what you are looking for. This could be your best opportunity to re-enter the job market after retirement. It is flexible, you can choose the type of job you want and decide if you want it to continue to be only temporary or if youd like additional hours.

Health, Child Care and Social Services
These are booming fields and always in need of good, caring workers. If youre a retired nurse or health care worker, chances are your skills are still needed. Consider returning to work on a part-time basis or if money is not an issue, as a volunteer.

Child care workers are in huge demand, and most retirees have children and grandchildren that have provided you with years of experience. Opportunities can be found at YMCAs, child care facilities, churches and after-school programs that provide care for working parents.

Fun, Hobby Jobs
Remember when you were working and your mind would wander to the golf course, the ski hills or the campground? Remember how you wanted to just run out of the door and hit the links? Consider making your hobby a retirement job.

Teach kids to play golf at a community golf club. Do you like to fish? Ask at the marina if they have any part-time jobs like a harbormaster, fuel attendant or boating safety instructor. If you have a RV, consider being a campground host for a summer.

Perhaps you like basketball, hockey, football or tennis. Is there a sports center or arena near you? They have jobs like a ticket taker, event planner or host for incoming sports celebrities. These can be perfect jobs for retirees that are looking for part-time income, and a chance to watch their favorite teams.

The Bottom Line
Whether you need to work to supplement your retirement income, just want to have fun or you are enthusiastic about a second career, the opportunities are there. Many times it just takes a dash of imagination, a positive attitude and sometimes just asking for an opportunity to get the job you are seeking.

You have a wealth of life skills to offer the workplace. Many leading corporations are seeking older workers for their knowledge and their work ethic. So, have fun and enjoy another career. (For related reading on retirement, see Managing Income During Retirement.)

Growth Ideas: 10 High Growth Stocks with Solid Profitability

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Forecasts for the global economy remain disjointed. While some analysts believe the markets are in store for a rebound, others only see doom and gloom. To be sure, there is no clear answer.

Considering the uncertainties and the potential for doom and gloom, we wanted to explore growth stock ideas that could be used as a hedge against an economic slowdown.

To create the list below, we started with a universe of about 150 growth stocks. By this we mean all of the stocks mentioned below have seen their earnings per share grow by more than 20% over the last five years.

In addition, Wall Street analysts project rapid earnings growth over the next five years for these stocks.

The DuPont equation
Next, we collected data on profitability sources. One of analysts favorite profitability tools is DuPont analysis — its a way to look at changes in return on equity (ROE) profitability (ie, net income/equity) by attributing those changes to certain sources. Some of the sources are more sustainable than others, thereby giving an analysis of strength in increasing profitability.

DuPont analysis breaks up a companys ROE into three components: net margin, asset turnover, and leverage. Companies with increasing net margin, increasing asset turnover, and decreasing leverage are viewed favorably.

Companies passing all requirements are thus experiencing increasing profits due to operations and not to increased use of leverage.

The list
Do you think these companies have strong enough profitability to withstand whatever the market has in store?
